Wao! Time flies when you are not having fun! I suppose it does feel like we only vacated yesterday. Sorry folks. Anyway, welcome back. I hope you had a restful break. I say so because 2nd semesters are like crazy times. Believe me. This is the semester that you need to work both hard and smart. On our part (lecturers), we will continue to provide the support that you need. I will be posting some interesting points for discussion on this blog. Make sure you do not miss a thing. For starters, do you think a used book store (or second hand book store) is a necessity at CPUT?   Please let me get your thoughts on this. It will also help if you could justify your position. Welcome back. Just before the end of 1st term, the department had its first MTech application screening. The applicants included Mr Dumisani Xesha, Mr Rhini Mthetho, and Mrs Cheryl Gordon. Others included Mr Saphetha Gwija, Ms Leah Matela and Mr Fattinald Rangongo. Acting HoD, Mr Petrus Venter chaired. In attendance were members of the research committee - Mr Chris Cupido, Chux Gervase Iwu and Mr Terence Hermanus. Prof Andre Slabbert, Dean of Research, was also present. First picture above shows Mr Rangongo making his defence while Picture 2 shows Mr Venter getting some clarity from Mr Rangongo. Prof Slabbert hailed the MTech defence as a worthwhile exercise that other departments should copy because it gives the prospective masters student a better chance of fine tuning his or her approach to the postgraduate study.

Prof Jensen I have in front of me the 2010 "Statement of Results" for the National Senior Certificate statement of a youngster who demands to study at university. They are: Afrikaans 43, English 39, mathematical literacy 38, life orientation 78, business studies 41, computer applications technology 31, and life sciences 28. At the bottom of the certificate is this unbelievable statement: "The candidate qualifies for the national senior certificate and fulfils the minimum requirements for admission to higher education." Understandably, this young woman takes these words literally, and correctly demands a seat in any place of higher learning. With the young woman's claim to study I have no problem. With the society that sets the bar for performance so low, I have serious problems. Slowly, slowly we are digging our collective graves as we fall into a sinkhole of mediocrity from which we are unlikely to emerge. We make excellence sound like a white thing. Behin...
