Chris Cupido’s Review of the State of the Nation Address 2012

Mr Chris Cupido - Financial Management Expert His Excellency, the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob G Zuma, presented his State of the Nation Address a few days ago. As expected, the National Planning Commission’s (NPC) findings on the most significant challenges South Africa faces constituted most of the president’s focus. Essentially, the stability and growth of the economy were the focal points of the speech. The emphasis was predominantly on Infrastructure to address the mired growth in the economy with unemployment, and unequal and distorted income distribution. The economy is plagued with high unemployment rate of 24% and government fails to address this problem and its target to reduce unemployment to sub 20% in 2011. The cost of doing business in South Africa is a major challenge. You have to put in a special effort. If I had to make the choice with my own children today, I would seriously consider not sending my child to school in South Africa, for one simple reason: I do not trust a system that makes it possible for a child to pass Grade 12 with 30% in some subjects and 40% in other subjects. I would be filled with fear when I discover that you can get 32% in mathematics and 27% in physical science and still get an official document that says you can continue to study towards a Bachelors degree at university. I would worry myself senseless when I enrol my child in Grade 1 knowing that she could be among the more than half-a-million children who would not make it through to Grade 12. I would be horrified at the possibility that the principal might force her to do mathematical lite
