Proud moments for the department

Image
Mr Mboniseni Mbatha - SRC Chair We say congrats to Mr Mbongiseni Mbatha who has just been elected chairperson of SRC at CPUT.. Mbatha, a final year student in Entrepreneurship at the Department of Entrepreneurship, hails from Kwa- Zulu Natal, completed his High School studies at Midrand High in 2006. He approaches his work with enormous focus; he never gives up, and he asks questions until he understands. While some students earn high grades by memorizing rules and facts, this student is a real scholar who strives for a deep understanding of difficult concepts. Mbatha has been actively involved in leadership and management positions throughout his tertiary studies. In 2010 he was the Projects officer of the CPUT SIFE team that was well represented in the Internationally Recognised competitions in Johannesburg. The following year he was elected the chairperson of SIFE CPUT and the Academics and Transformation in the Branch Executive Committee (BMF - Black management

End of Term Lunch with the TEAM

Image
After what was a an extremely busy term, the members of the department got together to give themselves a treat. Quite an outing; especially given that Cheryl resumes in her new position as director in government. Her pretty face (and let me also add: her calm personality) will be missed. The comforting part is that her office wont be too far away from us and she'd continue to service some groups of students. We also used the moment to say well done to Fattinald on his nomination for the Abe Bailey Award. The only one missing was Nicole, our indefatigable office manager.  Good times for us all. Cheryl (was Chris doing the usual financial sum???) Fattinald (the one on the right hand side of the screen) Perhaps the chilli got too hot for Cheryl and she threw her jacket away!!! The HoD with her radiant smile!!! Karjee, listening intensely (like lawyers do!!!) and that's me - right in front of you in a white top Chris (immediate right) and the rest

A potpourri of pictures. Enjoy!

Prof Rajah hangs out with us. Written by Zimasa Mentjies

On Tuesday 24 th April the Entrepreneurship Department had the privilege of hearing a mind opening lecture on entrepreneurial behavior from, special guest, Prof. Kanes Rajah, of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Prof Rajah heads the business school of TUT. Prof Rajah The lecture on entrepreneurial behavior focused on the diversity of entrepreneurs with key emphasis on entrepreneurs being either adaptors or innovators and how these two factors shaped the qualities and personal traits of these entrepreneurs. Prof. Rajah also spent time elaborating on the importance of innovation, growth and strength in entrepreneurial firms. The charismatic lecturer provided the department with current issues affecting the way young entrepreneurs think, act and talk. He also shared wise words on what differentiates ordinary entrepreneurs to entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs who stand out from the rest. Chris Cupido’s Review of the State of the Nation Address 2012

Image
Mr Chris Cupido - Financial Management Expert His Excellency, the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob G Zuma, presented his State of the Nation Address a few days ago. As expected, the National Planning Commission’s (NPC) findings on the most significant challenges South Africa faces constituted most of the president’s focus. Essentially, the stability and growth of the economy were the focal points of the speech. The emphasis was predominantly on Infrastructure to address the mired growth in the economy with unemployment, and unequal and distorted income distribution. The economy is plagued with high unemployment rate of 24% and government fails to address this problem and its target to reduce unemployment to sub 20% in 2011. The cost of doing business in South Africa is a major challenge. These costs reflect directly on the bottom line of businesses with destructive effects fuelled by high wage levels that outweigh production levels. His Excellency announced moves

Author: Prof. Jonathan Jansen* 24 February 2012 03:58 I would seriously consider not sending my child to school in SA It is extremely difficult to fail Grade 12 in South Africa today. You have to put in a special effort. If I had to make the choice with my own children today, I would seriously consider not sending my child to school in South Africa, for one simple reason: I do not trust a system that makes it possible for a child to pass Grade 12 with 30% in some subjects and 40% in other subjects. I would be filled with fear when I discover that you can get 32% in mathematics and 27% in physical science and still get an official document that says you can continue to study towards a Bachelors degree at university. I would worry myself senseless when I enrol my child in Grade 1 knowing that she could be among the more than half-a-million children who would not make it through to Grade 12. I would be horrified at the possibility that the principal might force her to do mathematical lite

Blessed 2012 Greetings to You

2012 Greetings to you. And welcome back to what promises to be an amazing year for our sweet department. We are truly excited about the department’s agenda for the year 2012. Please share in our excitement as I disclose some of the reasons for the warmth that we feel; much of which flows from 2011 circumstances. Firstly, our department is back to us! We are now looking after ourselves (and no longer an adjunct of another department) much thanks to the glorious thought of Prof Shakes Binza. And Mrs Raja-Yusuf accepts the offer to be our HoD!. Secondly, majority of the Dean’s awards were swept off by our students! Yes, our students! Check the blog for Our Shining Stars Receive Awards from the University for more on that story. Thirdly, our first guest lecture series kicked off with a bang. A very well attended event, Dr Ruben Richards (the guest lecturer) impressed upon the audience that without industrial development, there would certainly be no economic growth. He went on to say that
