Our HoD speaks to postgraduate students at the University of Ibadan

On a working visit to West Africa, Prof Chux Gervase Iwu was able to spend some time with postgraduate students of the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. Prof Iwu responding to a question Prof Iwu with some of the students and academic staff of IFRA/Africawatch Prof Iwu spoke to the students about a range of issues such as the need for focused research on socioeconomic development. Primarily, his talk focused on extracting a publishable paper from a thesis. Prof Iwu noted that writing scientific papers can be described generally as a “brutal exercise”, but with support from mentors as well as the guide he provided to the students, the task is close to completion. Prof Iwu shared a few operational tips which included the basic essay writing methodology encompassing an introduction, body of the essay, conclusion/summary. These steps he said are couched better if one followed the popular academic writing style of stating  1) the what; 2) the why

Reporting on the BTech Research Expo 2015

It was during one of th os e unstable days (sunny for a moment then suddenly windy and rainy for the next one) of spring in Cape Town; precisely on October 8 2015. That day was the department's research day. The essence of the event was for our BTech students to showcase their year-long research. The event kicked off at 9 am and ended at 4pm. Mr Laban Bagui who lectures the Research Methodology subject welcomed the audience comprising students and academics . He then invited Prof Maurice Dassah, who is the research coordinator for the faculty of Business and Management Science of CPUT, to open the BTech Research Expo 2015. Before the opening address, the students already put up their research posters on display for the adjudic ation.
