On a working visit to West Africa, Prof Chux Gervase Iwu was able to spend some time with postgraduate students of the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ibadan in Nigeria.

Prof Iwu spoke to the students about a range of issues such as the need for focused research on socioeconomic development. Primarily, his talk focused on extracting a publishable paper from a thesis. Prof Iwu noted that writing scientific papers can be described generally as a “brutal exercise”, but with support from mentors as well as the guide he provided to the students, the task is close to completion. Prof Iwu shared a few operational tips which included the basic essay writing methodology encompassing an introduction, body of the essay,
conclusion/summary. These steps he said are couched better if one followed the popular academic writing style of stating  1) the what; 2) the why; 3) the how ; and finally asking the all-important question - so what?.

The presentation was followed by a question/answer session.
