Entrepreneurship academic stars rewarded


ACHIEVEMENT: Lecturer Cecily Cridland and Prof Robertson Tengeh, Head of Entrepreneurship and Business Management, congratulate a student for excelling in first-year studies.

The Department of Entrepreneurship and Business Management recently hosted an awards ceremony to acknowledge students who excelled in their first-year studies in 2018.

The top 10 students in the mainstream programme were: Nzengo Lutumba (76%), Karl Abrahams (73%), Nolitha Gcado (70%), Qhamani Vena (70%), Nosiphiwo Gabuza (69%), Zandile Mbane (69%), Unathi Mpande (69%), Sibabalo Mdingi (68%), Mputhumi Nikelo (68%) and Sulaiman Roberts (68%).

In the Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) the following students came up in the top five: Karabo Namanyane (65%), Lelethu Nobete (64%), Mava Nomnga (64%), Noluvo Mpatha (62%) and Sisipho Tsheke (62%).
The students who were top of the mainstream class per subject were Issufo Junior (Business Computer Applications), Nkosikhona Mbane (Communication), Shakur Canham (Financial Management), Unathi Mpande and Nzengo Lutumba (Marketing) and Nzengo Lutumba for Entrepreneurship.

The top students per subject in the ECP were Lelethu Nobete (Business Computer Applications), Mava Nomga (Communication) and Karabo Namanyane for Entrepreneurship.

Alumnus Prominent Choto, an MTech graduate in Business Administration in Entrepreneurship, said the course does not only prepare one to start one’s own business but can also expand one’s career opportunities.

Prominent added that while she started working in the health sector, she found herself later delving into project management. “But now I’m in IT, others think that you should study IT in order to be in it.”

She encouraged the students not to wait until the last day before they work on their assignments. “Choose your study buddies carefully so as to prevent marks going to people who didn’t do the work,” said the former tutor.

Daniel King, who obtained a BTech in Management in Entrepreneurship from CPUT, said he learnt a lot during his first year in the Entrepreneurship course. Daniel now owns a food truck company which he recently started.

The department’s head, Prof Robertson Tengeh, congratulated the students who earned gifts and certificates.

Prof Jensen shares his disgust for poor results and the expectations of poor result holders

Prof Jensen I have in front of me the 2010 "Statement of Results" for the National Senior Certificate statement of a youngster who demands to study at university. They are: Afrikaans 43, English 39, mathematical literacy 38, life orientation 78, business studies 41, computer applications technology 31, and life sciences 28. At the bottom of the certificate is this unbelievable statement: "The candidate qualifies for the national senior certificate and fulfils the minimum requirements for admission to higher education." Understandably, this young woman takes these words literally, and correctly demands a seat in any place of higher learning. With the young woman's claim to study I have no problem. With the society that sets the bar for performance so low, I have serious problems. Slowly, slowly we are digging our collective graves as we fall into a sinkhole of mediocrity from which we are unlikely to emerge. We make excellence sound like a white thing. Behin
