Prof Jensen shares his disgust for poor results and the expectations of poor result holders

Image
Prof Jensen I have in front of me the 2010 "Statement of Results" for the National Senior Certificate statement of a youngster who demands to study at university. They are: Afrikaans 43, English 39, mathematical literacy 38, life orientation 78, business studies 41, computer applications technology 31, and life sciences 28. At the bottom of the certificate is this unbelievable statement: "The candidate qualifies for the national senior certificate and fulfils the minimum requirements for admission to higher education." Understandably, this young woman takes these words literally, and correctly demands a seat in any place of higher learning. With the young woman's claim to study I have no problem. With the society that sets the bar for performance so low, I have serious problems. Slowly, slowly we are digging our collective graves as we fall into a sinkhole of mediocrity from which we are unlikely to emerge. We make excellence sound like a white thing. Behin

1st term assessments are drawing closer

Dear Students, Your first assessment in 2011 is getting closer and closer. I hope that as the date draws nearer you are tidying up your part. Your part, incase you have forgotten, is to see to it that (1) all your assignments are completed, (2) your notes and textbooks are revised,  and most of all, (3) you LOOK THROUGH THE POSTS ON THIS BLOG AND ALSO CHECK THAT YOU HAVE NOT IGNORED WEBCT POSTS. Students of OEF and EUC are expected to take the posts on the blog seriously as some or all of the posts may form part of the exam questions. You have all made it this far. To 1st years, remember: the university is a different setting altogether; pretty different from high school. To 2nd years: if you got this far, do not forget how hard you worked. 2nd year is just not easy to achieve. You have one more leg to go. If you snooze, you loose! Good luck.

US & the Internet

Is it possible that the US exported the Internet to Norway and the UK out of the kindness of their hearts or could there have been an ulterior motive as some sceptics say?

The case of FUNCTIONALITY vs. CAPABILITY

Computers have the capacity to store and process data. The data stored in computers can be transmitted to a multitude of users in different locations. However, no computer can do this until it is ‘networked’. When this happens, the computer then has the functionality and the capability to transmit to a multitude of users in different locations. 1. Is this true or not? Back up your answer with at least two major points. 2. What do you understand by the concept of networking?

Is it more profitable to engage in an online business than a 'brick and mortar' type?

Is it more profitable to engage in an online business than a 'brick and mortar' type? 'Brick and Mortar' is the derogatory term for 'tangible' businesses such as a doctors practice, a book store, a restaurant, a pub, dance club, etc. An online business is a business that exploits the 'mechanics of the internet to function. Let me get your input on this.
