Annual Top Student Awards Ceremony

On Friday 20 November 2020, the Department hosted its second annual top student awards ceremony to celebrate top achievers for the 2019 academic year.

The ceremony which is usually held before the Semester 1 assessment period, had to be adapted owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event was run by the newest team member Mr Sedick Carr, who wooed the crowd with his witty sense of humour.

Guest speaker Joelma Kine registered for and completed the National Diploma in Entrepreneurship as well the BTech Management in Entrepreneurship, thereafter she used the knowledge learnt and started a South African based e-commerce business, Easy curves, specialising in shapewear. Two years into the business Joelma was encouraged to apply for scholarships and after multiple rejections, she was finally awarded the Chevening scholarship and pursued a MSc in Finance at the University of London which she says was inspired by legendary team member Mr Chris Cupido. After completing the study, she decided to move to France and register for a MSc in Digital Science at the University of Paris. Joelma shared that she was grateful for the support, encouragement and motivation from the Department.

The top students by subjects were:

Guest speaker Carmelino Neto a current 3rd year registered student, was not able to attend the event, however pre-recorded his speech, which is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/VGZBDK3fDVw.

Mr Carr closed the ceremony with the words; "No one is going to hand me success, I must go out and get it myself. That is why I am here. To dominate. To conquer. Both the world and myself".

A recording of the ceremony is available to view on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Ncfs-c5s2ok.
